Listening or reading about the polemic surrounding Miss California comment on Gay marriage, and one will wonder what all the fuss is about.
Yes California is considered a blue state. The western state after all voted Democrat for the last five presidential elections. In fact Barack Obama won 61% of the Californian electorate vote. It would thus be understandable to expect any wave coming out California to be radically liberal or progressive. Yet one should remember that this is Ronald Reagan’s state, and the republican governor Arnold Schwarzenegger runs the state. California voted to ban Gay marriage at the last presidential election, while at the same time they repudiated the republican ideology. Many Californians though, remain conservative in social issues especially Gay marriage. So why is it a travesty for Miss California to express the view of the majority of California? Why so much outrage? You can be a progressive democrat and still consider that a marriage is a formal union between a man and woman. Barack Obama, despite his utmost support for Gay rights does not support Gay marriage! He still carries the democrat flag pursuing as much as he can the progressive agenda. Apart from some radicals Gay activist groups, nobody engaged against him in the Medias, in the kind of “Stoning” faced by Miss California. I am scared by the level of radicalism coming from some liberal activists, and pushed forward by the channel of some in the Medias. The left has been bullied for too many years by the right; it was wrong then, and it will be wrong now to do same. As much as we despise the other side’s vision of the world, we need diversity and a strong debate to avoid the certainty of the absolute truth, which is only found in religion and fascism. It’s been said before and I say it again; let’s take a deep breath and agree to disagree.

I think that you are somewhat missing the point here. Regardless of political afliation of the state if california or its occupants, America is a country that prides its self on freedom of speech and that is the real shame about the uproar Miss Californias comments caused.
